From about 1584 to 1593 he was a pupil of Calvaert, then transferred to the academy run by the Carracci, where he absorbed their tradition of clear, firm draughtsmanship. Guido Reni was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. Best known for his commissioned frescos in chapels and for his oil paintings of biblical and mythological scenes, Reni’s work is characterized by his use of bright tones and smooth, idealized forms. The prime was probably painted while Guido was in Rome in 1621, around the same time he painted the portrait of Pope Gregory XV. Lucretia is a figure from Roman history and thus a popular subject among Roman patrons.
